Where there is power, there is resistance: in Claudio Monteverdi's opera, these two forces warp the brains and hearts of empresses, soldiers and ladies-in-waiting. The philosopher Seneca tries in vain to calm the desires and selfishness of everyone involved. The scandalous rise of Poppea to Roman empress at Nero's side is at the heart of Claudio Monteverdi's last opera. Kerstin Avemo makes her debut as Poppea. Anne Sofie von Otter continues her collaboration with director Christoph Marthaler at Theater Basel. Laurence Cummings conducts the La Cetra Baroque Orchestra.
