Wolfgang Tillmans (*1968, Remscheid) is indisputably one of the most important international artists of our time and, with his influence extending into the world of music and pop culture, has a decisive influence on how we perceive images and thus also our reality.
With Weltraum , Tillmans is preparing his first major show in a museum in Germany for more than half a decade. Following extensive retrospectives in the USA and Canada, the Dresden exhibition will focus on new works created since 2022: The starting point for Tillmans' latest photographic series is in part a journey that began in San Francisco, the hotspot for digital technologies on the US West Coast, and continued via Guam to Southeast Asia. In countries such as Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mongolia, he continued the interest in the material traces of internet corporations and AI companies that began in San Francisco and observed how this industry connects disparate regions in a close-meshed network.

Tillmans' global curiosity, which skillfully transcends geographies and disciplines, is the foil on which he explores the visuality of our environment in a catchy way. In his works, he repeatedly sets himself the difficult task of translating complexities into images - and in doing so creates accessible perspectives for a fearless and open coexistence. His sometimes large-format pictorial inventions from our present also consciously seek a dialog with the works of art from past centuries in the collections of the Dresden State Art Collections.
