What an amazing crowd! And you definitely have the most beautiful seats!" After an unforgettable performance including a declaration of love to the St. Pölten audience six years ago, Gregory Porter, one of the greatest voices in jazz and soul today, returns to the Festspielhaus.
With his debut album Water , the singer from Sacramento catapulted himself into the Olympus of modern jazz. With elements of soul, gospel and blues, Gregory Porter created a masterpiece that turned him from an insider tip into a celebrated star. His albums Liquid Spirit and Take Me to the Alley even won Grammy awards and on Nat King Cole & Me he paid tribute to the legendary jazz pianist. Porter recently returned to vintage soul and gospel with the album All Rise: horns, choir and strings play around his unique timbre.
In Dad Gone Thing, he reflects on his relationship with his father, while saxophone and Hammond organ engage in angry dialog. Thank You hurries along as a musicalized speech of thanks over erratic piano and in Revival Song the singer finds himself in the eye of a storm of gospel choir and clapping percussion. Whether in muted lows or euphoric highs, Porter's voice conveys an energy that is even more intense in concert.
