As a wonderland and cabinet of curiosities of the bizarre and the beautiful, the Buchheim Museum invites its visitors in 2023 to discover unknown and younger artists, explore new perspectives inside and outside the museum and rediscover things that were thought lost.

WIDESPREAD EXPRESSIONISM
Woodcuts were largely responsible for the widespread dissemination and popularity of Expressionism after the First World War and in the culture of the 1920s. It shaped the image of Expressionism and became the Expressionist medium of expression par excellence. Its special characteristics are sharply cut black and white contrasts, jagged stylizations, spatial incoherences and formal deformations. The works demonstrate a great stylistic and thematic diversity: portrait, nude, man and nature, city life, village, industry, variety, social criticism, paths to abstraction. Different stylistic approaches encourage comparative viewing and the question of what actually constitutes the expressionist woodcut. The works in the exhibition belong to the part of the Hierling Collection that has remained in the hands of the private collector. The collection is considered to be one of the finest collections of Expressionist woodcuts. Following presentations at the Museum Ulm and the Museum Schloss Moyland, they will now also be shown to the public in Bernried. A new edition of the existing catalog will be published to accompany the show.

OTTO. THE EXHIBITION
His comedy has changed our country - for the better. Germany has become funnier, more casual and more relaxed. Children and adults love him for it. Otto Waalkes will be 75 years old in July 2023. After solo exhibitions in Hamburg, Frankfurt and Emden, it was high time for the Frisian to make the leap to Bavaria. With exhibitions of works by Gaymann and Hurzlmeier, the Buchheim Museum is predestined to celebrate a milestone birthday with Otto Waalkes!
The multi-talented artist is known for inspiring people with unexpected punchlines. Until now, these have mostly consisted of words, sounds and noises. Now they also become visible. Because Otto is also a master of painting. And not just on the side: Waalkes studied art at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg. During his career as a comedian and musician, he has always remained true to painting and drawing. The Ottifants have become his trademark. At the Buchheim Museum, they will gallop through art history. "OTTO - the exhibition" is a cross-section of his life's work. It mainly comprises drawings and paintings, garnished with childhood documents, props from films and live shows as well as audio and video documents of his legendary performances - from "Theology" to "Theodorant".

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF THE BEAUTIFUL - KITSCH FROM THE GREEN GALLERY
In Buchheim's Green Gallery in Feldafing, there was a room entitled "The most beautiful of the beautiful". In it, the manic collector had gathered all kinds of bric-a-brac: In addition to embroidered pictures, dolls, porcelain figurines and a collection of artificial flowers and fruit, there were also machine-woven carpets from southern Europe and North Africa. In his book "Museum in the Clouds", he explains the idea of such a "kitsch" exhibition with the words that he also wanted to create "very crazy exhibitions" and question the concept of beauty. Buchheim always emphasized that he honestly and "without malice" respected and revered trivial art as an "expression of personality" and a "dream of beauty". This homage to the taste of the average consumer will now be reawakened in a "feast for the eyes" from June 2023.
