With Auslöschung. Ein Zerfall, the Burgtheater brings one of Thomas Bernhard's most radical novels to the stage - an unsparing work of linguistic art about origins, memory and the failure of one's own history.

When private tutor Franz-Josef Murau receives a telegram from his sisters informing him of the fatal accident involving his parents and brother, he sets off from Rome to his family home in Wolfsegg, Upper Austria. The involuntary return to his homeland triggers a flood of memories of his conflict-ridden youth and his existence as an outsider in a society still characterized by fascist tendencies.

Swedish director Therese Willstedt takes on the material for the stage and interprets it as a central text for Austria's coming to terms with its past.
