The Vienna Burgtheater, one of the most renowned theaters in Europe, has stood for outstanding theater art at its current location since 1888. With a broad repertoire and top-class productions, it delights an international audience every year and, as the largest German-language spoken theater, has a decisive influence on Vienna's cultural landscape.

Liliom is a barker at the carousel in the amusement park - a loud, coarse and yet irresistible suburban Casanova. The play, with which the visually stunning film and theater director Philipp Stölzl presents himself for the first time at the BURG, was written in 1909 during the final phase of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It tells of a time of social upheaval in which poor and exploited people begin to emancipate themselves. Unfortunately, Liliom's attempts at liberation lead him into the demimonde of gamblers and petty criminals: A friend persuades him to commit a robbery. But it goes wrong ... and in the end, nothing and nobody comes to his aid. Not even the heavens.
