The Bach Week has been held in Greifswald every year since 1946! After the Second World War, Greifswald was one of the few undestroyed old towns. The then KMD Hans Pflugbeil and his wife Annelise Pflugbeil, who had recently moved the Pomeranian Church Music School from Szczecin to Greifswald, used this gift of an intact city to organize the first "Bach Days" just one year after the end of the war. In the years that followed, this developed into a music festival that attracts more than 10,000 visitors every year.

This year, the Greifswald Bach Week is celebrating its 78th anniversary. From June 3 to 9, 2024, you will be able to experience great concerts. Under the motto "Bach romantically", it is dedicated to the rediscovery of Bach's music in the Romantic period: as the Bach Week's contribution to Greifswald's anniversary celebrations for the 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich. The highlight will be the performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in Mendelssohn Bartholdy's version on June 8, 2024, concluding with a festive service on June 9, 2024 at 10 a.m. in the cathedral with Bishop Tilman Jeremias.
June 3 to 9, 2024
