Shakespeare's famous comedy is a "play within a play", a play with longings and fears, identities and genders, power relations and desires. In summertime Athens, preparations for the marriage of Duke Theseus and Amazon Queen Hippolyta are in full swing. But not everyone at court is in a celebratory mood. Egeus is at odds with his daughter Hermia, who opposes his marriage plans and rejects Demetrius' hand in marriage. Hermia's heart beats for Lysander and vice versa. The two lovers flee their parents' sphere of influence into the forest outside Athens. They are secretly followed by Demetrius and Helena, who is unhappily in love with Demetrius, who in turn gives her the cold shoulder. In the shimmering atmosphere of the forest, between dream and reality, the young Athenians experience a magical midsummer night.

They have no idea when they flee into the forest: The whole of nature is in turmoil. The fairy king Oberon and his queen Titania are in the midst of a passionate relationship crisis, and not only the four lovers are caught up in the maelstrom of this quarrel, but also inexperienced craftsmen and women who are rehearsing a play for the duke's wedding in the forest. Oberon's servant Puck plays tricks on everyone with the help of a magical potion. It is not until dawn that the spook is over and everyone rubs their eyes in amazement, still dazed from the intoxication of the previous night. This night will have long-lasting effects.
