The Staatsschauspiel Dresden is one of the most renowned theaters in the German-speaking world and stands for productions of great aesthetic diversity. Each season, around 25 premieres are staged in both venues, the Schauspielhaus in the Old Town and the Kleines Haus in Dresden's Neustadt district, many of which are world premieres and commissioned works by contemporary authors.
The French Revolution changed social conditions in Europe more permanently than any other event. It literally marked the beginning of a new era, even if the revolutionary calendar was soon abolished. While civil liberties were successfully enforced, the question of social justice remained unresolved. The balance of power changed with incredible speed and heads rolled under the knife of the guillotine. In the confrontation between Danton and Robespierre, Büchner not only exposes the conflicts within the revolution in his drama, he also shows the cracks and scars in individuals and the violence of historical developments.
After WALLENSTEIN, Frank Castorf is once again staging one of the great literary works in which the political history of Europe is negotiated.
