In five chapters, the SGK looks at the extensive and humorous work of Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt. The starting point are a few photographs "Made in Karlsruhe" from the 1950s, which the photographer captured while stationed in the fan-shaped city as part of his military service for the U.S. Army. The photographs, which have rarely or never been shown before, show insights into a Karlsruhe of the past and reveal Erwitt's talent for telling personal but also universal stories in his motifs.

Photographer Elliott Erwitt, who was born in Paris in 1928 and died in 2023, immortalized himself in the collective visual memory through his iconic black and white photographs. With his portrait photographs of celebrities - including former US President John F. Kennedy, actress Marilyn Monroe and Cuban revolutionary leaders Fidel Castro and Che Guevara - the former president of the Magnum Photos agency created veritable symbols of these people. In addition, whimsical snapshots of dogs and emblematic architectural shots were constant themes in his work.
