Embedded in the picturesque old town of Bietigheim, the Städtische Galerie Bietigheim-Bissingen represents a successful synthesis of historical building fabric and modern architecture.

From A for pineapple to Z for lemon: fruit is part of our diet, the fruit trees in our gardens and therefore part of our everyday lives. But they are also - or precisely because of this - a recurring motif in the visual arts over the centuries, an aesthetic pleasure not only because of their scent and taste, but also because of the variety of their colors - from cherry red to apple green to lemon yellow - and the variety of their shapes: spherical melons, broken pomegranates or grapes composed of many individual parts. The spectrum ranges from pome and stone fruit to berries and citrus fruits.
Fruit is also significant for artists due to its symbolic charge: the apple, the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge in the biblical paradise, is perhaps the most frequently depicted type of fruit. "In the beginning was the apple" is the title of the art foundation of entrepreneur and scientist Prof. Dr. Rainer Wild, from whose private collection, amassed over more than 40 years, the works in the exhibition originate.
Around 100 fruit pictures from classical modernism to the present day are presented in the media of painting, drawing, watercolor, printmaking, photography, sculpture and video from Alexej Jawlensky and Gabriele Münter to Andy Warhol and Georg Baselitz to Karin Kneffel and Thomas Schütte - beautiful to eat!
