The paintings and graphics of Wolf-Rüdiger Hirschbiel (*1942) are characterized by both austerity and lightness: surface forms create tunnel-like spaces, suggesting window- or door-like openings. Surface becomes depth, oppressive spatial lines lead to a liberating distant effect. His watercolors in particular seem to express a longing for light and reflect Hirschbiel's early profession as an artistic glazier and glass painter. Although squares and rectangles play the main role in these abstract paintings, the airy sheets with their delicate, vibrant colors are always reminiscent of nature and architecture - especially as they were mostly created while traveling: In Scandinavia and southern Europe, in North Africa and China, the artist processes his impressions into fantastic geometric landscape compositions.
