Gert and Uwe Tobias (born 1973) are among the best-known printmaking artists of their generation. In the past, the artist duo has not only updated the woodcut technique for the present, but has also created a multifaceted and multi-layered oeuvre that includes collages, drawings, sculptures and installations in addition to woodcuts.
The works created by Gert and Uwe Tobias in joint authorship are created in the field of tension between cultural memory and individual fantasy. Their pictures of pictures draw on very different sources and genres: from art-historical motifs to pop-cultural elements and motifs from Transylvanian folklore. By composing the most diverse styles and traditional strands into something new and unexpected, the artist brothers release the energies stored in collective symbols and update them in a vital and expressive way for the present. The show developed for the Kunsthalle spaces presents an overview of the twin brothers' work and the groups of works they have created to date for the first time in a long time.
