The draughtsman, painter and survivor Jürgen Vogdt, who had an impact far beyond the Lower Rhine region, died far too early at the beginning of 2023. To mark the occasion, the Museum Kurhaus Kleve is showing an accentuated selection of works from his artistic estate.

The vital energy with which Jürgen Vogdt devoured the external world and condensed it into an independent pictorial cosmos is undiminished in the approximately 125 drawings as well as in the paintings and graphic works. As a stream of incessant notations, ciphers and eruptive outbursts, the sheets and papers illustrate the process of pictorial invention in the alternation of gestural determination and inner vulnerability.

Fueled by lifelong inspiration from literature, film and music and with a self-confessed affinity to the work of Antoni Tàpies, Cy Twombly and later Tracey Emin, the original autodidact unwaveringly pursued his own, decidedly non-academic path through labyrinthine ramifications to the great open expanse of his work.
