In their third opera together, premiered in 1916, Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal create a musically and linguistically rich reflection on the question of how we love, what art can be and what battles are fought both in art and in love.

The big moment has arrived: A young composer is finally allowed to premiere his opera based on the ancient myth of the fate of the abandoned and deeply sad Ariadne. But shortly before the start of "Ariadne auf Naxos", the pleasure-seeking patron decides to have the tragic opera and the lusty comedy of a commedia dell'arte troupe performed at the same time. What begins as a nightmare for the young artist turns out to be a juxtaposition of different concepts of love that we all carry within us - from dramatic grief to light-footed joie de vivre, from eternally faithful love to eternally new love.
