"The Story of the Bamboo Gatherer or Princess Kaguya" is Japan's oldest fairytale-romantic tale and dates back to the year 900!

While working, a childless bamboo collector discovers a foundling whom he and his wife raise as their own child. The radiantly beautiful child has been sent to Earth as a gift from the moon, and even though her beauty attracts powerful men as suitors for her bride, Kaguya is the princess of the moon and must return there.

The French choreographer Martin Chaix is no stranger to Leipzig. From 2006 to 2009, he was a soloist at the Leipzig Ballet under Paul Chalmer. Since 2015, he has worked as a freelance choreographer for internationally renowned companies such as the Ballet de l'Opéra national du Rhin, the Ballet de l'Opéra national de Paris and the Ballett am Rhein, Düsseldorf. His precise, emotional and highly musical language of movement lives from a deep humanity.
For "The Moon Princess", Martin Chaix explores the richness of Japanese legend and tells a story of family and home, of belonging and obligations in a challenging world.
