With Henry Purcell's enchanting and romantic comedy of mistaken identity The Fairy Queen, the St. Gallen Concert and Theater Festival is taking place on the Flumserberg for the first time. The baroque opera, which is based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, transports the audience to an enchanted forest, for which the impressive natural backdrop in the south of the canton of St. Gallen provides the perfect setting.
In five masked plays, poets, kings and queens and many a magical creature wrestle for love. At the center is Titania, the queen of the fairies, and her turbulent relationship with the king of the fairies, Oberon. Purcell's opera, which is rarely performed today, impresses with its colorful harmonies, melodies of overwhelming beauty and dance-like rhythms as well as witty and expressive text settings.
The director Anna Bernreitner, who was awarded the Götz Friedrich Prize in 2021, is an expert in staging opera in an unusual context with reference to the surroundings. On the podium is conductor Corinna Niemeyer, who was most recently the musical director of L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Theater St. Gallen. Together, they will stage Purcell's opera with an interdisciplinary cast on the Flumserberg, transforming the surrounding woods and meadows into the Fairy Queen's fairy forest and thus creating a special experience in which art and nature merge.
