Together with the State of Baden-Württemberg and under the patronage of the Embassy of the Italian Republic in Germany, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is presenting the exhibition Carpaccio, Bellini and the Early Renaissance in Venice.

To mark the 500th anniversary of his death, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is dedicating an exhibition to Vittore Carpaccio for the first time in Germany. The aim is to make the public aware of the master's significance for the Venetian early Renaissance and to reassess his role in painting around 1500: his pictorial chronicles subtly interweave reality and fiction, historical events and contemporary everyday life. They update the myth of the glorious maritime republic, the "Serenissima Repubblica", for a society in transition. Complemented by numerous loans, the focus is on two major works by Carpaccio from the Staatsgalerie's collection, which have been specially restored for the exhibition. The artist's paintings are juxtaposed with those of his contemporaries, in particular Giovanni Bellini.
