"Anatevka" is a bittersweet balancing act between the most comical entertainment and the painful passing of the present.

The small village of Anatevka with its inhabitants, above all the cosy milkman Tevje and his unruly, freedom-loving daughters: "Anatevka" is often dismissed as shtetl kitsch, as a romanticized, ahistorical longing from a lost world or Tevje as a messenger of a time that never existed.
On closer inspection, however, this classic musical is much more a parable about the idea of home, identity, the importance of rituals, a story about growing up and generational conflicts. At the same time, the use of texts by Sholem Alejchem, one of the founders of modern Yiddish literature, makes it clear how fragile peaceful coexistence was and is.
