Initially receiving only moderate attention, Carmen, based on the novella by Prosper Merimée, quickly gained international popularity. It has long been one of the most frequently performed operas - and can be seen again in Münster in 2024 in a new production after ten years!

Love, passion, encounters with fate. These are the ingredients of Bizet's Carmen, which premiered in 1875. The opera combines serious themes such as social exclusion and the question of the "right" life with beguiling music such as the aria "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" ("Love is a wild bird"). The world-famous protagonist Carmen is fearless and seduces men as she pleases. Nothing is more valuable to her than her own freedom, which ultimately drives her lover Don José to despair.
Premiere January 27, 2024
Further performances: February 3, March 3 and 9, April 11 and 19, 2024
