The story of the unloved fisherman Peter Grimes is at the heart of Benjamin Britten's opera of the same name. It made the composer internationally famous in the middle of the 20th century. In the new season, "Peter Grimes" will celebrate its premiere at Theater Osnabrück in January 2024.
A village on the edge of the cliffs, followed only by the rolling sea. The people know the struggle with nature for survival. But when the fisherman's apprentice Peter Grimes does not survive a storm, turmoil breaks out in the village. Was it an accident or is Peter Grimes a murderer? The village has already formed a firm opinion and rallies against the outsider. Just as a man cannot hold back a storm, Peter Grimes cannot fend off the resentment of his neighbors. In Britten's opera, the sea calls out to us inexorably, tugging at notions of community and morality. Mental loneliness and human abysses crash over us like waves on the beach. Rebellious music that penetrates deep into the soul and never lets go.
