George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein are the most famous examples of the global combination of sophistication and entertainment that became typical of American music in the 20th century!
Both composers were children of Russian-Jewish immigrant families, both absorbed a wide variety of influences, including spirituals, ragtime, blues and jazz, and both also worked for stage and film. In addition, Duke Ellington, who was only half a year younger than Gershwin and shaped jazz like no other.
