Our coldest season can score with astonishing aesthetics. The diffuse gray winter light needs to be captured precisely, nature frozen in frost captured in icy silence. And then there's the snow!

Artists search for texture and color in the form of a pristine carpet, wild drifting snow or thawing slush. This suggests that the seasonal paintings are mostly frosty, barren and desolate, but the exhibition also pays homage to the beauty of winter in a blaze of color. After all, it also offers all kinds of advantages: Mountains become toboggan runs, lakes are transformed into ice-skating arenas. But the dramatic forces of nature are also expressed: the hardship caused by relentless cold, isolation and loneliness.
The depiction of winter has a long tradition in art history. Snowy landscapes in particular have been a popular motif for centuries. The exhibition will feature winter cityscapes, village and industrial landscapes, gardens, fields and field edges, as well as untouched nature. It goes to the coast as well as to the mountains. Of course there will be skiing and sledging, and childishly exuberant snowball fights can also be observed. A snowman awaits discovery. Abstract winter paintings follow the artists' free associations.
