Experiment Expressionism - Schiele meets Nosferatu is a comprehensive, cross-genre exhibition on Expressionism. Curated by Roland Fischer-Briand and Rolf Johannsen, the show is based on paintings from the Heidi Horten Collection, in particular German Expressionism, including works by Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde and Max Pechstein. These positions are placed in context with works of Austrian Expressionism by Herbert Boeckl, Helene Funke, Oskar Kokoschka, Max Oppenheimer, Egon Schiele, Helene von Taussig and others.
In addition to the classical visual arts, painting and sculpture, the exhibition also focuses on silent film - the new, if not leading medium of the time - which is illustrated in the exhibition with posters, film stills and excerpts from classics such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror, but also films less familiar to the general public such as Genuine or The Tired Death.
On selected evenings in the atrium of the Heidi Horten Collection, silent films will be shown for the first time in long version with musical accompaniment.
