In 2024, the ACHT BRÜCKEN | Musik für Köln festival is all about nuances and nuances, about "subtle differences". These can be found in pitches and tonal systems, musical approaches and traditions - and of course in the stories, backgrounds and experiences of the people who create, play and perform the music.

One of these people is ACHT BRÜCKEN portrait composer Enno Poppe, a specialist in microtonality. He is one of the most important composers of new music in Germany. As a conductor, Enno Poppe regularly performs with Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Musikfabrik and Ensemble Resonanz as well as with international orchestras. He has been a member and conductor of ensemble mosaik since 1998. His works are mostly composed of seemingly simple, almost mathematical structures with the smallest musical building blocks, from which they develop, branch out and always remain unpredictable. Ten of his works are on the program, including the full-length works "Prozession" and "Speicher" in the Cologne Philharmonie. Even Enno Poppe has never experienced two world premieres in one day: on the last day of the festival, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, conducted by François-Xavier Roth, will premiere Enno Poppe's "Strom" in the Philharmonie in the morning. Just a few hours later, the Ensemble Recherche will realize the very first performance of "Laub" in the Wolkenburg!
Speaking of world premieres: A total of 18 brand new works will be premiered as part of the festival. One of the premieres is "Palimpsest" by Kemal Dinç, a work for transtraditional chamber ensemble, choir and spoken choir. The concert is one of the many invitations to look beyond the horizons of Central European music. The festival includes programs from Turkey, Kurdish songs, Cretan compositions, South and ancient Indian and Korean music traditions. This year's festival offers plenty of room to discover new things - come and see for yourself!
