Spectacular Grail epic set to music about temptation, compassion and redemption
Amfortas, leader of the Grail Brotherhood, is tormented by a wound that cannot be healed - struck by his arch-enemy Klingsor, to whom he also lost the Holy Spear of Christ guarded by the community. Day after day, the Knights of the Grail are forced to watch helplessly as Amfortas dies from his pain and his feelings of guilt. Only a prophecy gives them hope: a "pure gate" will one day redeem the ailing king through his compassion and win back the Holy Spear, which the fallen Grail knight Klingsor guards in his magic garden. Then Parsifal knocks on the gates of the Grail Castle...
The well-known director Michael Thalheimer ("Othello", "Macbeth") tells Wagner's last, monumental stage work in his usual suspenseful visual language, reduced to the essentials.
