In his satirical opera The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, Leoš Janáček succeeded in further developing his advanced musical language and enriching it with ambiguous comedy. In his production of this rarely performed work, Canadian director Robert Carsen also brings the eventful history of the city of Prague back to life; Simon Rattle is the musical director.

In his local pub, Prague landlord Brouček is notorious for being a philistine and small-minded. He himself is tired of constantly having to deal with insolvent tenants and wants to get away from the daily annoyances. After indulging in plenty of beer one night, his wish is miraculously fulfilled through two fantastic excursions: first, Brouček lands on the moon, which is inhabited by a society of artists that is as bizarre as it is spiritual. Then he suddenly finds himself in medieval Prague, where he finds himself caught between the fronts of a religious struggle and has to go to war with the Hussites ...
