Theater Freiburg is home to musical theater, drama, concerts, dance and young theater. With around 370 employees, in-house productions, co-productions and guest performances are developed and performed on four stages. A diverse cultural offering is created around the stages every season.

Based on Margaret Atwood's successful dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale, the 1998 opera by Danish composer Poul Ruders tells the story of the handmaid Offred in the fictional, strictly patriarchal, Christian fundamentalist theocracy of Gilead. In this military dictatorship, women are largely without rights. Many are enslaved as handmaids and abused to bear children for the ruling class of commanders and their infertile wives. This explosive story was made into a film by Volker Schlöndorff as well as a very successful series in 2017. The impressive opera is now being staged for the first time in Germany in Freiburg.
