Joseph Beer's works contain opulent melodies, lushly innovative harmonies and effervescent jazz elements. Although Beer felt obliged to the great German and Russian tradition on the one hand and the Italian school on the other, the influence of Mahler, Scriabin and Gershwin can be heard in his works. After 90 years, The Prince of Shiraz is now returning to the stage as a long-awaited German premiere.

On board a luxury liner, the young American Violet Colton and the mysterious Prince Nadir of Shiraz meet. Unexpectedly, the American ship is attacked by the Japanese navy. In order to rescue Violet from the clutches of the warring parties, Prince Nadir pretends to be his fiancée and "kidnaps" her to his Persian palace ... Orient and Occident collide - initially unreconciled. With his first stage work, the exotic operetta The Prince of Shiraz, the young Joseph Beer celebrated his major international breakthrough. This sensational success premiered in Zurich in 1934 and was soon performed in half of Europe and South America. After the "Anschluss" of Austria to Nazi Germany, Beer's works were banned and disappeared from the repertoire.
