Ludwigsburg is a festival city! The Ludwigsburg Palace Festival is THE cultural festival of the city with a renowned program in the fields of music, dance, theater and literature. Founded in 1932, the Ludwigsburg Festival is one of the oldest festivals in the German-speaking world. The center of the festival is the Ludwigsburg Residential Palace.

The Ludwigsburg Palace Festival is one of the oldest festivals in Germany. Since 2019, Jochen Sandig has been the director of the festival, which is transforming itself into a "festival of the arts, democracy and sustainability", continuing to welcome internationally acclaimed guests and inviting innovative in-house productions in the fields of concerts, dance and performance. The Ludwigsburg Palace Festival dates back to Wilhelm Krämer's founding of the Mozartgemeinde Ludwigsburg in 1932 and the first Ludwigsburg Palace Concert in 1933, which was the nucleus of the later Schlossfestspiele. Today, it is one of the oldest festivals in Germany. What began as a small chamber music series was extensively expanded under the artistic direction of Wolfgang Gönnenwein, who worked for the festival from 1972 to 2004.
