The examination of the function and design of spaces is a key issue in the work of the Austrian writer and playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874-1929). For him, spaces are never just physical environments, but also represent emotional states. The stage as a space where theatrical events become reality is the subject of many of his reflections.
Visitors are guided through the exhibition in a prologue and three acts. The focus is on Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier and Der Rosenkavalier-Film. And even Hofmannsthal's apartment in the center of Vienna, just a few meters away from the Theatermuseum, is part of this desire for staging. Furnished by architect and set designer Oskar Strnad, the living rooms are transformed into an urban stage.
A cooperation between the Theatermuseum and the Freies Deutsches Hochstift in Frankfurt am Main.
