The influence of America must be felt by anyone with an instinct, Antonín Dvořák once said of his 9th Symphony From the New World.

The work, in which the Bohemian composer combines musical impressions from America with those from his homeland, was premiered with sensational success by the New York Philharmonic in 1893 and is still one of the most popular compositions in the classical canon today. Before the interval, Italian conductor Enrico Calesso brings original American music to Rostock. After John Adam's The Chairman Dances, Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto will be performed. Barber, who composed his first opera at the age of ten, wrote the violin concerto soon after his worldwide success with the Adagio for strings, which has become one of the most popular of the 20th century since its premiere. The violinist Sophia Jaffé, who has been closely associated with the Rostock orchestra for many years, will perform the solo part.
