The KLANGVOKAL Music Festival Dortmund has been presenting the diversity of vocal music from around the world since 2009 - from opera and classical vocal music to jazz, world music and pop. It unites the entire spectrum of vocal expression in one festival, promotes artistic dialog between different genres with intercultural projects and social discourse with current topics. As every year, the program for this year's edition from 15 March to 11 October 2024 features a number of exceptional artists. Here are a few highlights!

Accademia Bizantina
Nicola Antonio Porpora's work is characterized by high virtuosity and the masterful use of musical means, just like that of his contemporary Arcangelo Corelli and his pupil Francesco Geminiani. While the latter made a name for himself in the field of instrumental music in particular - especially by establishing the concerto grosso - Porpora's oeuvre primarily comprises operas. However, it also includes vocal works for the Passiontide, such as the "Duetti per la Passione di Gésu Cristo" or the "Lezioni per il Mercoledi Santo". These little-known gems of Italian Baroque music are now presented by the original sound ensemble Accademia Bizantina, winner of the Opus Klassik 2021 award among others, under the direction of early music star Ottavio Dantone, soprano Suzanne Jerosme and French contralto Delphine Galou.

Henry Purcell: The fairy Queen
After the outstanding performance of Cavalieri's "Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo" in October 2023, the Belgian master ensemble is now returning to KLANGVOKAL to celebrate its 20th anniversary in Dortmund with a semi-staged production of Henry Purcell's semi-opera "The Fairy Queen", freely adapted from Shakespeare's comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The brilliant voices of Vox Luminis will resound in the midst of a spirited shadow play that balances between reality and the subconscious. After performances in Barcelona, Bruges, Oviedo and Paris, this production will now be performed in Germany for the first time.

Jules Massenet: Werther
Jules Massenet's master opera "Werther" is full of passion and unfulfilled love. The libretto is based on Goethe's epistolary novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther". With this work, the French composer created a musical drama that fascinates with its breathtaking intensity in the vocal and orchestral parts. The long-suffering title character is played by the American tenor Matthew Polenzani, one of the great stars of the MET in New York. Annalisa Stroppa makes her debut alongside him in the role of Charlotte. The Italian has made a name for herself with her charismatic voice at the Bregenz and Salzburg Festivals, among others. The conductor is Giacomo Sagripanti, who last conducted the work in Vienna.
