This fall, the Max Ernst Museum Brühl of the LVR is dedicating a major exhibition to the Swiss sculptor, painter and draughtsman Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). The international show with over 60 works has been created in collaboration with the Fondation Giacometti, Paris, and highlights Giacometti's surreal work and, for the first time, his artistic and friendly relationship with Max Ernst (1891-1976).

Like Max Ernst, the sculptor moved to Paris in 1922, where they met in 1929 and worked in neighboring studios. The show presents Giacometti's work from the 1920s and 1930s, which is characterized by the Surrealist movement in Paris and the artist's great interest in exploring the unconscious, chance, the ambivalence of signs and in ancient and non-Western art. Alongside these works, other surrealist-influenced sculptures will be presented, including his characteristic slender, expressive bronze figures, which he developed after 1945, together with paintings, drawings and prints. Important major works by the artist from each of these creative phases are on display, including Le Couple (The Couple, 1926), La Femme cuillère (The Spoon Woman, 1927), La Boule suspendue (The Floating Ball, 1930), Objet désagréable (Unpleasant Object, 1931), Le Nez (The Nose, 1947) and La Cage, première version (The Cage, first version, 1949-50).
