The new style of Impressionism, which emerged in France in the 1860s, was perceived by artists as a breath of fresh air. With quick brushstrokes and radiant colors, fleeting moods of light, new leisure pleasures or travel impressions were captured directly on canvas in the open air. The principles spread rapidly and also led to a profound change in painting in Northern Europe.
The traveling exhibition focuses in particular on paintings by Dutch, German and Danish Impressionists. In cooperation with the Museum Singer Laren and the Landesmuseum Hannover, over 80 top-class paintings and oil studies have been selected, including works by artists such as Anna Ancher, Lovis Corinth, Isaac Israels, Johan Barthold Jongkind, Jo Koster, Max Liebermann, Peder Severin Krøyer, Max Slevogt and others.
Her motifs lie in the changing light of the day and seasons - painted at home or while traveling, in the garden or on the beach, in the countryside or in the city. The individual variations are revealed, which can be summarized under the generic term "Impressionism in the North". The thematic presentation invites visitors to explore the similarities and differences in the reception of Impressionism in the North across all national borders.
The exhibition also celebrates the 15th anniversary of the MKdW and is under the patronage of Karin Prien, Minister for General and Vocational Education, Science, Research and Culture of the State of Schleswig-Holstein.
